The Joe Rogan Experience #2412 with Adam Carolla

JOE ROGAN: Good to see you, brother. What’s happening?

ADAM CAROLLA: Oh, man, everything.

JOE ROGAN: It’s been a few years, man.

ADAM CAROLLA: Yeah.

JOE ROGAN: When was the last time I saw you?

ADAM CAROLLA: I think I saw you outside of the Ice House.

JOE ROGAN: Oh, yeah.

ADAM CAROLLA: You were coming in, doing a set. You got a Land Cruiser or something with a LS SWAP engine in it.

JOE ROGAN: That’s right.

ADAM CAROLLA: And you showed it to me. And I think I was thinking about it. I went to your house to do the podcast early in the day.

JOE ROGAN: Early, yeah.

ADAM CAROLLA: Up deep valley, up the hill. And then I think you got your place sort of down, strip mall kind of place down in the flatlands of the valley.

JOE ROGAN: Yep.

ADAM CAROLLA: Yeah. And I think that, I mean, it’s been a million years.

JOE ROGAN: Yeah, it’s been a while. Time flies, buddy.

The Passage of Time

ADAM CAROLLA: I know. It’s so sad, you know? You know what’s sad? It goes so slow when you’re young and miserable. You know what I mean? Now I’m old and happy and rich and it just flies by, you know?

I mean, all the stuff you want to do and it just goes right by you. And then when I was 13, I just sat in a class and stared at the clock and just went, God damn.

JOE ROGAN: You know what that is? It’s relative. It’s a percentage of your life. So when you’re 10, a year is 10% of your life.

ADAM CAROLLA: Right.

JOE ROGAN: You know, when you’re 55, a year is really quick.

ADAM CAROLLA: I know. It just sucks that I remember going back to school in September and going, when’s Christmas vacation? And they’d go, two months. And I’d go, oh man, no way, that’s too long. And now it just goes flying by. But now it’s good and you want it to slow down.

Yeah. I always think of life as sort of driving to San Francisco from LA. The first time you do it, it takes a long time. And the 50th time you do it, it’s nothing. And that’s the relative part.

JOE ROGAN: You get used to it.

ADAM CAROLLA: Yeah.

JOE ROGAN: Yeah. It’s, I don’t know. Just got to live in the moment. Enjoy it while it’s here. Hope it works out. Hope something’s next or not, I guess.

Near Death Experiences and Change

ADAM CAROLLA: Yeah. That moment, you know, that thing. You know, it’s that thing where people have a near death experience and then they swear they’re going to change their ways and they’re going to appreciate everything and they’re going to do all that. I don’t think it works.

JOE ROGAN: Works on some people.

ADAM CAROLLA: Yeah.

JOE ROGAN: I’ve met people that have had near death experiences and completely changed who they are.

ADAM CAROLLA: I wonder if it’s worth trying to have a near death experience. The problem is it’s too close to death.

JOE ROGAN: Well, it’s really, what kind of a person are you? Are you a reflective person? Are you an introspective person? Do you think about the way you think and the way you live? And do you analyze it and decide whether or not this is a good way to proceed or whether or not you need to make adjustments?

Some people don’t. They don’t look, they don’t self-analyze. They don’t course correct. They just don’t. And so something comes along. “I’m changing everything.” But you never changed anything in your whole f*ing life. You’ve never done that. You’ve never exhibited that kind of will. You never had that kind of discipline. So how are you going to change now? You’re not. You’re going to say you’re going to change, then you’re going to go right back.

ADAM CAROLLA: Yeah, I think I went to high school with all those guys.

JOE ROGAN: Me too.

ADAM CAROLLA: It’s crazy, right?

JOE ROGAN: Most people don’t know how to live. Don’t understand that you are in control of the way you think about things. It’s one of the only things you’re in control of.

The Gift of Change

ADAM CAROLLA: Well, change is one of the greatest gifts we have. If you think about perks of being a human being versus being a hyena or any other creature, it’s you get to change. And then so many people just squander that gift, which is the greatest gift.

And they just go, “I’m not.” And then you’re sort of no different than any other animal if you just sort of stay the course, you know? And the ability to grow and change and transform is such a gift that people completely squander.

JOE ROGAN: Well, it’s hard because you have to change the way you think. You have to decide that you’ve been doing things wrong. And people don’t like to do that. They don’t like to admit fault. They don’t like to look at themselves in a negative way and analyze what they’ve done wrong and be critical of themselves.

ADAM CAROLLA: Yeah, I know. Everyone is a crazy externalizer now. And young people have it more than our generation. Well, it’s encouraged. You can’t tell them stuff. They just push back on everything.

JOE ROGAN: It’s encouraged to think that everyone else is the reason why you are not happy.

The Value of Coaching

ADAM CAROLLA: Yeah, I get it. But I think growing up, and maybe it’s just being coached a lot, you know, you got coached a lot, I got coached a lot. It’s just dudes telling you you’re doing something wrong all day, every day.

And I believe they did it because they cared, because they wanted you to get better, because they wanted you to succeed. They wanted to win, you know? And I just got used to being coached.
