Let’s begin with a clear warning from Ecclesiastes 7:26, as it says, “I find more bitter than death the woman whose heart is snares and nets and her hands are chains. The man who pleases God will escape her, but the sinner will be ensnared by her.” The Bible doesn’t hold back when it warns about the dangers of an ungodly woman. Many people come to me asking, “Is this woman right for me?” Or “How do I know if she’ll lead me closer to God or further away?” My answer is always this: Look at the signs. The word of God gives us clear guidance on what to watch out for.
As C.S. Lewis once said, “If you love anything more than God, even a good thing, it becomes a destructive thing.” This reminds us that relationships, when not built on godliness, can easily become idols that destroy us.
If you’re a man, this message can save you from heartache and destruction. If you’re a woman and you find yourself matching these traits, don’t get mad. Let it be a wake-up call. Use that conviction to repent, to change, and to become the woman God has called you to be.
Today we’re going to break down 11 signs of an ungodly woman – traits that can lead you down a path of pain. These are not my opinions. This comes straight from the Bible. Let’s take this seriously and allow God’s word to guide us.
Sign #1: The Attention Seeker
Sign number one: She’s an attention seeker and hates modesty. Proverbs 7:10 says, “Then out came a woman to meet him, dressed like a prostitute and with crafty intent.”
The first sign of an ungodly woman is her rejection of modesty. Proverbs 7 describes a woman dressed with intent to allure and seduce. But this is about far more than clothing. It reveals the condition of her heart. An ungodly woman craves attention and validation from the world instead of finding her worth in God.
We live in a time where immodesty is celebrated. Social media has amplified this problem, encouraging women to showcase their bodies for likes and comments. Pictures that reveal far too much have become common, even among those who claim to follow Christ. But what does this say about our priorities?
The Bible instructs women to dress modestly with humility and respect for themselves and others. In 1 Timothy 2:9 Paul writes, “I also want the women to dress modestly with decency and propriety, adorning themselves not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, but with good deeds appropriate for women who profess to worship God.”
C.S. Lewis captures this truth well: “True humility is not thinking less of yourself. It is thinking of yourself less.” A woman’s beauty is not meant to be a tool to capture attention or manipulate others. Godly beauty flows from the inside – a heart that reflects Christ. True beauty comes from a spirit of humility, kindness, and purity.
Now this doesn’t mean women should feel ashamed of their God-given beauty. Instead, modesty shows reverence for God and respect for oneself. It protects not only the woman but also the hearts of others around her.
Men, here’s the warning for you: A woman who constantly seeks attention by dressing or acting immodestly may not have the right priorities. If she craves the approval of the world now, it will only create conflict and heartache later.
To the women listening: If you feel convicted, don’t run from it. God’s grace is sufficient to transform any heart. Your worth is not found in attention but in being a daughter of the King. When you live to honor him, your beauty will radiate in ways that clothing or appearance never could.
Sign #2: The False Prophet
Sign number two: She pretends to be godly but lacks godly fruit. Revelation 2:20 says, “Nevertheless, I have this against you: You tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophet. By her teachings, she misleads my servants into sexual immorality and the eating of food sacrificed to idols.”
The second sign of an ungodly woman is that she appears religious on the outside but lacks the fruits of true godliness. She may use spiritual language, attend church, and claim to follow Christ, but her actions reveal something very different. Jesus warned about people like this in Matthew 7:16 saying, “By their fruits you will recognize them.”
The Jezebel spirit is a perfect example in Revelation. Jezebel called herself a prophetess, claiming to be someone holy and righteous, but her influence led others into sin. This still happens today. There are women and men who wear the Christian label but refuse to live according to God’s word. They might know scripture but twist it to suit their lifestyle. They may be in church every Sunday but spend the rest of the week gossiping, manipulating, or living in immorality.
This type of behavior is dangerous because it creates confusion, especially for those who are young in the faith. As C.S. Lewis said, “It is not what a man does on Sunday, but what he is Monday through Saturday that reveals his true character.”
God calls us to discern the difference between those who truly love him and those who are only pretending. In 2 Timothy 3:5 Paul warns about people who have a form of godliness but deny its power. This means they may appear righteous outwardly, but their lives lack the transformative power of the Holy Spirit.
Men, do not be deceived by outward appearances or religious talk. A godly woman will bear fruit that reflects her faith: love, humility, kindness, and obedience to God. Women, this is a reminder to examine your own hearts. Are you walking the walk? Or are you just talking the talk? True godliness cannot be faked forever.
Sign #3: The Pleasure Seeker
Sign number three: She is not sober-minded and pursues worldly pleasures.
Titus 2 verses 4 to 5 says, “Then they can urge the younger women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God.”
The third sign of an ungodly woman is her lack of self-control and her pursuit of worldly pleasures. Titus 2 calls women to be sober-minded, to live with self-discipline and a clear focus on the things of God. Yet an ungodly woman rejects this. Instead of seeking holiness, she chases after temporary highs: partying, drinking, drugs, or constant distractions.
We see this mindset everywhere today. The culture glorifies excess: “Live your truth,” “Do what feels good,” “You only live once.” But this path leads to emptiness and destruction. A woman who indulges in these lifestyles opens doors for the enemy to wreak havoc in her life, her relationships, and her family.
The Bible warns in Proverbs 14:12, “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.” When a woman continually chooses worldly pleasures over God’s calling, her priorities reflect where her heart truly lies. It’s not about occasional mistakes – none of us are perfect – but about a lifestyle of unrepentant sin, where the pursuit of pleasure becomes her master.
This kind of woman is dangerous not only to herself but also to those around her. For men, aligning yourself with someone who doesn’t value sobriety and self-control can pull you away from your own walk with God.
As C.S. Lewis once said, “Sin gets its power by persuading me to believe that I will be more happy if I follow it. The power of all temptation is the prospect that it will make me happier.” Men, seek a woman who values sobriety, someone whose mind and heart are fixed on Christ, not worldly distractions. Women, if this convicts you, remember that repentance is powerful.
Sign #4: The Rebellious Spirit
Sign number four: She refuses to submit to godly authority. 1 Peter 3 verses 5 to 6 says, “For this is how the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves by submitting to their own husbands, as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him Lord. And you are her children if you do good and do not fear anything that is frightening.”
The fourth sign of an ungodly woman is her rejection of submission to godly authority. God has established an order for relationships and family – an order that brings peace, unity, and protection. Yet an ungodly woman rejects this design and chooses rebellion instead.
Submission is not about oppression or weakness. It is about trust, humility, and respect for God’s authority. In a healthy marriage, the man submits to Christ, and the woman in turn submits to her husband’s leadership. This doesn’t make her inferior; it reflects God’s divine order.
Unfortunately, many reject submission because it challenges pride and independence. They see submission as an attack on their value. But the truth is submission to godly authority brings freedom. It is a sign of strength, not weakness.
The Bible gives us a cautionary tale in Genesis 19, where Lot’s wife refused to trust and submit to God’s instruction to leave Sodom. Her rebellion cost her life. Similarly, a woman who refuses to submit often disrupts the peace of her home, creates division, and opens doors for the enemy to sow chaos.
As C.S. Lewis profoundly said, “The reason why many are still troubled, still seeking, still making little forward progress is because they haven’t yet come to the end of themselves. We’re still trying to give orders and interfering with God’s work within us.”
Men, watch for a woman’s heart toward authority. If she constantly challenges and disrespects God-given leadership – whether at home, in church, or in her walk with Christ – this is a red flag.
Sign #5: The Seductress
Sign number five: She entices with her eyes and behavior. Proverbs 6 verses 24 to 26 says, “To keep you from the evil woman, from the smooth tongue of the adulteress. Do not desire her beauty in your heart, and do not let her capture you with her eyelashes. For the price of a prostitute is only a loaf of bread, but a married woman hunts down a precious life.”
The fifth sign of an ungodly woman is her use of manipulation and enticement through her eyes, words, and behavior. Proverbs warns about the power of seduction and how it leads to destruction. An ungodly woman uses her beauty and charm to manipulate, capture, and control. Her goal is not to build godly relationships but to satisfy selfish desires, often leaving men spiritually and emotionally broken.
This type of behavior can be subtle. It may begin with flirtatious glances, enticing words, or actions designed to provoke lust or admiration. In today’s culture, this is amplified through social media, where provocative pictures and suggestive behavior are used to gain attention.
The Bible warns men not to fall for these traps because they lead to spiritual ruin. Samson’s story in Judges 16 illustrates this truth. Delilah’s beauty and manipulation lured him into a snare that cost him his strength, his calling, and ultimately his life. Samson ignored the warning signs and allowed himself to be enticed, and it brought him to destruction.
C.S. Lewis said, “Satan does not fill us with hatred of God, but with forgetfulness of God.” This is exactly what happens when someone is captivated by an ungodly woman’s enticement. God’s truth becomes an afterthought. Lust and emotional manipulation cloud the heart and mind, leading people away from God’s will.
Men, guard your heart and your eyes. Beauty is not evil, but when it’s used to manipulate or provoke lust, it becomes a tool of destruction. Look for a woman who values purity and modesty.
Sign #6: The Negligent Homemaker
One who honors God in her behavior. Women, ask yourself this: What are you using to gain the attention of others? Godly character or worldly charm? A woman who seeks to honor God will strive to inspire others toward holiness, not temptation.
Sign number six: She refuses to be a keeper at home. Titus 2:5 says, “To be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled.”
The sixth sign of an ungodly woman is her rejection of her role as a keeper at home. Titus 2:5 instructs women to care for their households, not as a limitation, but as a calling that brings honor to God. Yet an ungodly woman neglects this responsibility, choosing instead to chase after worldly priorities, selfish ambitions, or constant distractions.
Being a keeper at home does not mean a woman is confined to the house. Instead, it emphasizes stewardship, making the home a place of peace, love, and godliness. The home is the foundation of family, and when a woman rejects this role, disorder often follows. Children lack guidance, husbands feel unsupported, and the home loses its sense of refuge.
The Bible gives us the example of the Proverbs 31 woman, a godly woman who cares for her household, works hard, and manages her responsibilities with wisdom. In contrast, Proverbs 7 verses 11 to 12 describes an ungodly woman: “She is loud and wayward; her feet do not stay at home. Now in the street, now in the market, and at every corner she lies in wait.” This woman is restless and distracted, constantly seeking entertainment or attention outside her home. Her actions open doors for temptation, neglect, and chaos to creep into her family.
As C.S. Lewis once said about the role of a woman, “The home is where a woman provides the expressions of love for which she was made. It is no small thing that the place where she is most needed and where she can most honorably serve is where she belongs.”
Men, a godly woman prioritizes her home and sees it as a ministry. Look for someone who brings peace, order, and godly values into her household. Women, reflect on your role as a keeper of your home, whether single or married. Your home reflects your priorities. Is it a place where God’s love dwells, or has it been neglected for the distractions of the world?
Sign #7: The Immoral Dancer
Sign number seven: She loves sexual immorality and ungodly dancing. Matthew 14 verses 6-8 says, “But when Herod’s birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced before the company and pleased Herod, so that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask.”
The seventh sign of an ungodly woman is her embrace of sexual immorality and behavior that promotes lust, like ungodly and provocative dancing. In Matthew 14, we see the tragic example of Herodias’ daughter, whose seductive dance led King Herod into sinful compromise, resulting in the beheading of John the Baptist. Her actions revealed the devastating power of sexual temptation when misused.
Today this spirit manifests in many ways, whether through provocative dancing in clubs, on social media platforms, or even casual entertainment. Women who use their bodies to entice others may feel empowered in the moment, but in reality, they are participating in behavior that dishonors God and damages themselves and others.
Paul warns in 1 Corinthians 6:18, “Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body.” Sexual sin isn’t just a small issue. It deeply impacts our hearts, minds, and relationships. A woman who embraces immodest dancing and sexual immorality is allowing the enemy to use her to lead others into temptation.
This isn’t just about physical behavior. It’s also about the condition of the heart. Jesus taught in Matthew 5:28, “But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”
As C.S. Lewis said, “Sin will take you farther than you want to go, keep you longer than you want to stay, and cost you more than you want to pay.” Men, guard your hearts and eyes. Do not allow lust to take root in your life, no matter how harmless it may seem.
Women, your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). Honor God by rejecting behaviors that promote lust and choosing modesty instead. A godly woman understands her worth isn’t found in how much attention she receives, but in how closely she reflects Christ.
Conclusion
As we’ve explored these signs of an ungodly woman, we are reminded of the importance of discernment and godliness in our relationships and personal lives. The Bible warns us clearly in Ecclesiastes 7:26 that an ungodly woman can become a trap, leading to spiritual, emotional, and even physical destruction. But God in his love and wisdom also gives us a path to escape through repentance, obedience, and seeking his guidance.
For the men listening, be vigilant. Test the spirits as the Bible instructs, and seek a woman whose life bears the fruit of godliness: humility, purity, and a love for God. Don’t be deceived by outward appearances or charm, but look for a heart transformed by Christ.
For the women, if you see yourself in any of these traits, don’t lose hope. God’s grace is bigger than your mistakes, and his mercy is new every morning. 1 John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” Allow God to refine you into the woman he created you to be.
