Max Blumenthal Interview: Can Trump Salvage His Presidency? (Transcript)

In this episode of Judging Freedom, Judge Andrew Napolitano and journalist Max Blumenthal break down the 2026 midterm results and argue that the Iran war and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz shattered Donald Trump’s Republican coalition. They discuss surprise Democratic Senate wins in Kansas, Nebraska and South Carolina, J.D. Vance’s break with the war, Tucker Carlson’s nuclear warning, and the coming fight inside the Democratic Party over Israel. Read the full transcript of this interview below:

How Iran Defeated Trump’s Israel First Republicans

JUDGE ANDREW NAPOLITANO: (00:01:01 – 00:01:27) Hi everyone, Judge Andrew Napolitano here for Judging Freedom. Today is Wednesday, November 4th, 2026, the day after (sic) a momentous midterm election here in the United States. Max Blumenthal joins us now. Max, a pleasure as always. Max, how did Iran defeat Trump’s Israel First Republicans?

MAX BLUMENTHAL: (00:01:29 – 00:06:18) Well, this is the subject of a piece I just put out on Substack, building on a little note I wrote last night on Twitter X. Iran defeated the US in war, in a war which Donald Trump’s National Security Director and Secretary of State Marco Rubio admitted Trump carried out on behalf of Israel to defend Israel from a nonexistent, non-imminent threat. And within a week, as I said at the time, the United States was defeated resoundingly in that war due to 2 factors.

Number one, Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which has proven to be a vice grip around the neck of Trump and his cult-like Republican Party, particularly in the American heartland. And number 2, due to the US spending one-third of its interceptors within just a few weeks of the war and most of its standoff munitions, making it virtually impossible for them to end Iran’s control over the Strait of Hormuz.

So the most significant losses last night that I see for the Republican Party are not necessarily what we saw in Michigan, for example, where Mike Rogers, who has been the biggest voice of the national security state, former FBI agent bearing the legacy of the George W. Bush neocons, huge cheerleader for the Iraq War and the Iran War, who said that he actually joined public life in order to defend Israel, was defeated by Abdul El-Sayed.

I think the more— or even in New York, where the Democrats picked up a House seat from Mike Lawler, who was one of Israel’s biggest tools in the House who actually sponsored a bill last year to give Israel access to B-2 stealth bombers and GBU bunker buster bombs.

Diesel Prices and the Revolt in the Heartland

The big— the more significant losses were in Nebraska and Kansas. The Democrats have not won a Senate seat in Kansas since, I think, 1932. There were these liberal Republicans who typically dominated Kansas politics, like Nancy Kassebaum and Bob Dole, but since then, the state has basically been controlled by the Christian right, starting with Sam Brownback, who was a huge Christian Zionist, taking the Senate in the ’90s and dominating Kansas politics.

Nebraska, the Republicans always, to borrow a line I heard Dan Rather use many years ago, “roll through Nebraska like a big wheel through a cornfield.” And the Democrats have picked up Senate seats in those states. I’ve actually never seen anything like this in my life. They also flipped a seat in Iowa, which is another big agro-producer state.

So what’s going on there? The price of diesel has increased by 70% since the same time last year because of the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, where 20% of the world’s LNG passes through, along with all sorts of other petrochemical products and important items. That, and the surge in diesel has caused Trump to attempt an emergency measure offering $15 billion in aid to farmers during the last weeks of the campaign. It didn’t work. That’s an additional cost of the war.

And Trump in his own base has his people revolting against him because they understand now, for I think the first time, the connection between a war that the United States has fought on behalf of Israel and their own kitchen table issues. And this is backed up by a poll taken just before election night, which showed that 74% of Americans declared the Iran war as pivotal to their vote or extremely important. And over 60% said that they are voting against the Republicans because of the Iran war.

So it’s the Strait of Hormuz and the military defeat that the US suffered in a war on behalf of Israel that has shattered Donald Trump’s Republican coalition. He has transformed in less than 2 years MAGA into MIGA, “Make Israel Great Again.” There’s no going back. The American public sees through all of his phony appeals and his cons.

Bribes, Gerrymandering and the $4 Billion Gambit

JUDGE ANDREW NAPOLITANO: (00:06:19 – 00:06:56) They also saw through these crazy, vapid promises: $5,000 for every adult if reelected, $15 billion to spread around to farmers to reimburse them for the expensive fuel and fertilizer that they now can’t afford. The strategic location of these mammoth buildings that supposedly these foreign auto companies are going to build. I don’t think that swayed people at all, Max. Trump thinks he can bribe people.

MAX BLUMENTHAL: (00:06:57 – 00:09:44) They thought they could bribe people. They thought they could rig the map through massive gerrymandering. They basically wiped out Democratic districts south of the Mason-Dixon line. And then there were these bribes.

Donald Trump at the last minute, before voters went to the polls, attempted something that I think is highly significant. He actually said, I think this was on Fox, that he was going to end $4 billion in aid to Israel. Obviously, he’s referring to transforming the aid into military integration with Israel. But he thought that this would appeal, would work with voters, because even Donald Trump recognized that Israel had become a strategic liability, a poison pill.

And he was attempting the same con job that he pulled when he went to Dearborn, Michigan, along with, I think, Tom Barrack and some of his Arab American team to cut into Kamala Harris and Joe Biden’s base in a swing state where they had scarcely campaigned and promised an end to the Gaza genocide.
