Transcript of Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson Interview: IMO Podcast

Editor’s Notes: In this episode of IMO, Michelle Obama and her brother Craig Robinson welcome Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson for a thoughtful conversation about the experiences that shaped her path to becoming the first Black woman to serve on the United States Supreme Court. Justice Jackson reflects on growing up in a family of public servants, building confidence as a young student, and the mentors who encouraged her to dream big, while also sharing the story of her decades-long love with her husband and the challenges of balancing demanding careers with raising a family. Drawing from her memoir, she discusses the lessons she hopes young people will take away, breaks down how the judicial system works, and explains why an independent judiciary is essential to a free society. The episode also includes practical advice on finding mentors and navigating difficult professional relationships. (July 29, 2026)

Welcome and Introductions

MICHELLE OBAMA: Hi, Craig.

CRAIG ROBINSON: Nice suit.

MICHELLE OBAMA: We have a special guest, so I wanted to kind of show up like— I mean, business.

CRAIG ROBINSON: And make me feel underdressed.

MICHELLE OBAMA: I know I should have called you.

CRAIG ROBINSON: You should have let me know.

MICHELLE OBAMA: And been like, boy, put on a jacket. But that’s cute. That’s very non—

CRAIG ROBINSON: Yeah, that’s just what I want to be in front of a Supreme Court justice is cute.

MICHELLE OBAMA: Just very cute.

CRAIG ROBINSON: Yeah.

MICHELLE OBAMA: Yeah. But you know, you did your best. How’s it going? How’s life?

CRAIG ROBINSON: Life’s good. Life is really good. Yeah.

MICHELLE OBAMA: Where are you staying?

CRAIG ROBINSON: I’m staying in the Hollywood Hills. So not far from here.

MICHELLE OBAMA: Okay.

CRAIG ROBINSON: I have a real nice Airbnb. What I like about this one, it’s got a lot of outdoor family space. I mean, really, there are balconies off of almost every room and then it’s got a huge sort of patio.

MICHELLE OBAMA: Oh, that’s cool.

CRAIG ROBINSON: It’s really neat.

MICHELLE OBAMA: Yeah. So you’re not rambling around there lonely.

CRAIG ROBINSON: Hearing an echo because I’m the only one in a 4-bedroom place. So it’s really nice and it’s in a really good neighborhood. It just reminded me of why people, a good reason why people open their homes up and have them on Airbnb, so that you can show off your neighborhood and walk around the Hollywood Hills.

MICHELLE OBAMA: Is that what you think the family that owns this house wants you to know?

CRAIG ROBINSON: Well, I think they want a little extra cash.

MICHELLE OBAMA: Yeah, that’s what I was wondering.

CRAIG ROBINSON: It’s in a really cool—

MICHELLE OBAMA: I think that’s the real reason.

CRAIG ROBINSON: It’s in a really cool neighborhood. And I’m not in the steep part, so I can walk around.

MICHELLE OBAMA: Did you go for a walk?

CRAIG ROBINSON: Not yet. Not yet.

MICHELLE OBAMA: Okay.

CRAIG ROBINSON: I’ve been working.

MICHELLE OBAMA: You woke up this morning—

CRAIG ROBINSON: Well, I had a meeting this morning, so I was up early. But if I didn’t have a meeting, it’s close enough to Laurel Canyon Road where you can walk down there and then you’re back in civilization.

MICHELLE OBAMA: So with shops, and if you wanted to walk and get your morning coffee, you could?

CRAIG ROBINSON: Yeah, I could.

MICHELLE OBAMA: I think you should do that tomorrow and tell me all about it.

CRAIG ROBINSON: I might do that.

Introducing Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson

MICHELLE OBAMA: Well, I think we should get to it. It feels like we’re becoming a big girl and boy podcast.

CRAIG ROBINSON: I know. This is—

MICHELLE OBAMA: With our guest today. It’s like we’re elevating ourselves.

CRAIG ROBINSON: You know, you have probably met Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, but I have never met her. And she doesn’t seem like a Supreme Court justice. She’s so delightful.

MICHELLE OBAMA: That’s a big diss to the others that you don’t know.

CRAIG ROBINSON: Well, I haven’t met any. So this is the first one. But I was—

MICHELLE OBAMA: But she gives you an air of delight unlike the others.

CRAIG ROBINSON: Well, no, I wasn’t going to say that. But you see how— see, that’s what Misha does. She puts words in my mouth. And then I end up being scolded on social media. No, but I’m really excited about our discussion because I just can’t wait to talk about her life.

MICHELLE OBAMA: Yeah, it’s not often that people get access to a sitting Supreme Court justice.

CRAIG ROBINSON: I know. How did you get so lucky?

MICHELLE OBAMA: Oh, man. I don’t know. Just born that way.

CRAIG ROBINSON: Yeah.

MICHELLE OBAMA: Well, let’s give her a proper introduction and let’s get this conversation started.

CRAIG ROBINSON: So Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson is an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, confirmed in 2022 as the first African American woman to serve on the court. And she is the author of The Lonely One— which we have here— The Lovely One. See, I’m so nervous.

MICHELLE OBAMA: Yeah, just settle down.

CRAIG ROBINSON: I mean, you’re shaking a little bit. I know, I know. I’m really excited.

MICHELLE OBAMA: Justice Jackson, you guys.

CRAIG ROBINSON: Justice Jackson, please come join us before I—

MICHELLE OBAMA: You got my brother all shook. It is so good.

JUSTICE KETANJI BROWN JACKSON: So great to see you. Thank you.

CRAIG ROBINSON: Thank you so much for being here.

MICHELLE OBAMA: Welcome to IMO.

JUSTICE KETANJI BROWN JACKSON: This is wonderful. Yes, I’m perfect.

MICHELLE OBAMA: Oh my goodness. Well, it is really, really an honor. You know, just for our listeners and viewers, we’ve met on several occasions, but we have never had the real time to just check in and be.
