Transcript of Veritasium: What Everyone Gets Wrong About AI and Learning – Derek Muller

Read the full transcript of science communicator Derek Muller’s lecture titled “What Everyone Gets Wrong About AI and Learning” Premiered Apr 9, 2025.

Introduction

DEREK MULLER: Thank you. Thank you everyone for coming tonight. It is my absolute pleasure to be here to talk about how AI will change education. I must admit, maybe first off, that I wanted to sort of shoehorn AI into this talk a little bit. Because what I’m really passionate about is education.

So my question is really how is AI going to play a role in that? But first, we have to understand the bigger picture of how education actually works or doesn’t work in some cases. You may have seen this clip. This is an AI tutor from ten months ago. So let’s take a look.

AI TUTOR: Can you first identify which sides of the triangle are the opposite, adjacent, and hypotenuse relative to angle alpha?

STUDENT: Alright. So I’m pretty sure this is the angle alpha right here. Right?

AI TUTOR: Correct.

STUDENT: Now looking at the triangle, which side do you think is the hypotenuse? Remember, hypotenuse? I’m not totally sure. I think I think it might be this one, but I really am not sure.

AI TUTOR: The side AC? You’re close. Actually, side AC is called the adjacent side to the angle alpha. The hypotenuse is the longest side of a right triangle and is directly opposite the right angle. Can you find which one is the hypotenuse?

STUDENT: Oh, okay, I see. So I think the hypotenuse is this really long side from A to B. Would that be correct?

AI TUTOR: Exactly, well done. [VIDEO CLIP ENDS:]

The Perpetual Complaints About Education

So it’s pretty impressive. And again, this was ten months ago, so AI tutors have only gotten better, I’m sure, in that time.
